First, to the best of my knowledge, based upon what others have tried to compile, there are more than 1500 martial arts styles worldwide - and most of them are good for whatever they are good at. I am an 8th degree Black Belt in Guardian Kempo, a style that includes a Karate, Jujutsu and Kobujutsu (weapon) system and integrates them ([...]). Second, I have a tremendous amount of respect for most styles. Part of my personal philosophy is "I have a point; you may also have a point." So I'm open-minded when evaluating techniques, styles and books on martial arts and self-defense. Put that together, and I'm always on the lookout for anything interesting. I have my favorite masters I follow, and every once in a while I check out others who are recommended to me. Recently, Master Allen Woodman's books were given to me, and Master Jeffrey Miller's books suggested.

Having now read one of Master Miller's books, I am suitably impressed. This is the sort of strategic and tactical thinking that can be dropped into any martial art style, classical, modern, or sport, to take your existing skills and apply them to real-world self-defense. Trying to organize one's thinking to shift from non-combative to combative thinking can be a leap. This book will help you do just that.

Keep in mind that if you are looking for something that is a step-by-step manual of how-to, this is not it. He does not technique techniques in this book. He does not teach what body parts to use as weapons nor what opponents body parts to attack as targets. This is strategic. It's a system of thinking so you can learn to run your brain through the necessary process to apply your skills to real combat. Treat it like a five step kata, insert your own style's techniques, and you will make a great leap in the street-application of your skill. That's my opinion.

For $2.99 (the price as of my last check), it costs less than taking a single class (at least my classes typically run about $15 per class). It's short enough to finish a quick read in the time you might spend in a single class. Actually applying it and conditioning the thinking as a reflex will take more time, of course, but for the investment of time and money, it is quite a find. Highly recommended.

This is an awesome book that you simply must read if you are interested in self-protection. Jeffrey Miller is an outstanding writer and cuts through the chaos of a street fight by breaking it down into understandable components. Thankfully, this is not another "How to Punch and Kick" book. It's much more. This is a principle-based approach to self-defense, teaching you to how to observe your environment and analyze threats so that you stay 5 steps ahead of any attacker.
A well thought-out, well written and well rounded piece. it takes the lessons that I've learned over 30 years of martial arts, working as a bouncer, travelling around Europe as a young man, and generally getting into scrapes I should have avoided, and it breaks those lessons and strategies into easy-to-understand paragraphs.

Anyone who reads and understands this book will be well suited to avoiding or dealing with many of the unpleasant situations that arise from time to time as we go through life.

Jeffrey - well written, well done!
This book helped me to understand that just by doing the self defence classes and training doesn't necessarily equip you for a threatening real life situation. Great information on the dynamics and steps to take to really defend yourself.
If you're looking for simple punching/kicking techniques so you can go out and "trash bozo's," this book is not for you.

If you're a serious student of martial arts who wants to move beyond the physical dimension so you can understand the dynamics of an attack, this book IS for you.

If you're considering studying martial arts, and you're uncertain how you might actually use it, this book is for you, too.

Shidoshi Miller shares with the reader the same tactical concepts he shares with his black belt students; I know this because I am one of those students. This book also exemplifies his emphasis on training yourself to respond realistically to attacks that might actually happen in real life. This may be the most valuable book you ever buy.
I remember as a grade schooler being scared to walk home at night. I read about self-defense and took ju-jitsu classes. Those lessons stay with me to this day, which is why I believe strongly in the importance of quality self-defense instruction.

Miller exudes credibility that comes from hard-won experience. In this book, he doesn't teach moves, he teaches mindset. Mindset can be applied to whatever martial arts/self-defense system you're learning. One principle that he emphasizes throughout the book is that there's a difference between the classroom/dojo, and a real life street fight.

His "5-D" (Discern, Defend, Disrupt, Deliver, Defend) structure gives a clear framework for any fight and what to do during each phase.

Miller gives training exercises for observation and footwork (including a link to a video about proper walking), as well as blocking and shielding drills which can be applied to your martial arts/self defense practice.

I would have liked more details about the "Disrupt" phase, especially psychological/emotional/mental unbalancing of an attacker.

There are also spelling errors, typos, and broken links in the book - but these can be fixed. For me, the book is still easy-to-read, and these errors don't detract from the value of the information that Miller is providing.

I'll apply Miller's teachings to any future martial arts/self defense training that I take - making sure to prepare for real life attackers, not just classroom students who "follow the rules" and aren't really trying to hurt me.
